It: Welcome to Derry Season 2 Promises a Different Kind of Pennywise
It: Welcome to Derry is preparing to explore a new side of Pennywise in its second season. Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane has teased a fresh take on the terrifying clown, promising a bigger story for the HBO horror series.
In an interview with Deadline, Kane revealed that the team is already working on the scripts. He also confirmed that Season 2 has received the green light and that director Andy Muschietti is working on casting.
“We’re writing the scripts. We’re about halfway through the writing of the scripts,” Kane shared.
A Different Pennywise Awaits in Season 2
Kane hinted that the new season will show Pennywise in a way audiences have never seen before. Bill Skarsgård is expected to return to the role of the terrifying character.
The showrunner also promised a larger season with a fresh setting and a different atmosphere. However, he has not revealed specific details about Pennywise’s new appearance or behaviour.
“It’s very exciting what we’re building,” Kane said, adding that the bigger season would bring new challenges for the creative team.

It: Welcome to Derry Season 2 Goes Back to 1935
The second season will move the story to 1935, during the Great Depression. This time, the series will explore the brutal story of the Bradley Gang, a group of bank robbers whose visit to Derry turns into a nightmare.
Kane compared the setting to a classic Warner Bros. gangster film. The story will feature bank robbers, struggling communities and street children travelling by rail, alongside religious fundamentalism.
The events will reveal another dark chapter in Derry’s history. The storyline also draws on the wider world created by Stephen King in his 1986 novel It.

The Series Continues Pennywise’s 27-Year Cycle
Season 1 takes place in 1962, while the next season travels further back in time. The series follows Pennywise’s pattern of returning to Derry every 27 years.
This approach allows the show to explore different periods in the town’s history and reveal how the evil surrounding Pennywise affects new generations.
By setting Season 2 in 1935, the creators can introduce a different historical backdrop while expanding the horror mythology.
Brad Caleb Kane Prepares for a Bigger Season
Kane said the upcoming season will be larger than the first, making the production a significant challenge for the team. Meanwhile, Muschietti is involved in casting as the writers continue developing the story.
Although the release date and full cast details remain unannounced in the supplied report, Kane’s comments suggest that the series will take a bold new direction.
Until It: Welcome to Derry returns, horror fans can also look out for Crystal Lake, another prequel series from Kane. The show explores the origins of Friday the 13th villain Jason Voorhees and his mother, Pam, played by Linda Cardellini.
