Bollywood star Taapsee Pannu is calling out persistent industry double standards regarding female-led films. During a recent promotional interview for her Netflix project Gandhari, she addressed the fragile ecosystem surrounding women-centric cinema.

According to Pannu, a single box office setback often triggers a domino effect. When high-profile projects like Alpha, starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari, underperform, hesitant investors frequently pull financial support from unrelated upcoming movies.

Consequently, multiple independent projects get shelved entirely based on someone else’s failure. Pannu explained that financiers quickly generalize these isolated losses by claiming women-driven stories are no longer profitable.

Furthermore, she highlighted the disproportionate pressure placed on female-led cinematic releases. While major male-driven blockbusters rarely face strict perfectionism regarding their scripts, women-centric films must outperform expectations to prove their worth.

Even though budgets for female-led projects remain a fraction of massive male-led spectacles, they face intense scrutiny. Pannu noted that a single commercial failure unfairly punishes the entire community of actresses and creators.

Conversely, the reverse trend holds true when a women-led film achieves unexpected box office success. Hit projects instantly spark industry-wide interest, prompting producers to explore similar genres like horror or action.

Ultimately, Pannu emphasizes that women in cinema remain tethered to a shared fate. As the industry evolves, creators must continue pushing boundaries to secure lasting financial backing.
