Tupac Shakur Murder Case Finally Reaches Trial

Nearly three decades after Tupac Shakur was fatally shot in Las Vegas, the long-running murder case has reached trial.

Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a 63-year-old former gang leader from California, is accused of orchestrating the shooting that killed one of hip-hop’s most influential artists. Davis has pleaded not guilty.

    How Tupac Shakur Was Killed

Tupac was shot on September 7, 1996, shortly after attending a Mike Tyson boxing match in Las Vegas.

The rapper was travelling in a BMW with Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight when a white Cadillac pulled alongside their vehicle.

Gunfire was directed at the car, hitting Tupac several times. He was taken to hospital but died from his injuries six days later at the age of 25.

Knight was also injured but survived.

Why Did the Murder Remain Unsolved?

Tupac’s killing became one of the most famous unsolved murder cases in music history.

The shooting came during a period of intense rivalry between different factions of the American hip-hop industry and amid longstanding tensions between rival gangs.

For years, investigators struggled to bring charges in the case. Several people believed to have been inside the Cadillac were later killed, leaving Davis as the only surviving person linked to the vehicle.

Who Is Duane “Keffe D” Davis?

Davis was a former member and leader within the South Side Compton Crips gang.

Prosecutors allege that he helped organise the attack and supplied the firearm used in the shooting.

Authorities have described him as the person who allegedly coordinated the attack. However, Davis is not accused of personally firing the fatal shots.

Prosecutors argue that he can still be held responsible for the killing because of his alleged role in planning and assisting the crime.

Orlando Anderson and the Night of the Shooting

One of the people historically linked to the shooting was Orlando Anderson, Davis’s nephew.

Earlier on the night Tupac was killed, Anderson had been involved in a confrontation with members of Tupac’s group at the MGM Grand.

Prosecutors allege that the shooting was carried out as retaliation for that confrontation.

Anderson was never charged in Tupac’s murder and died in an unrelated gang shooting in California in 1998.

Davis’ Past Statements Could Be Crucial

One of the most significant elements of the prosecution’s case involves statements Davis made over the years.

Davis discussed the events in interviews and later described aspects of the shooting in his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend.

Prosecutors are expected to use those statements to argue that Davis was involved in organising the attack.

The defence, however, has challenged the reliability of his previous accounts and has argued that some of his statements were exaggerated or made for financial and publicity reasons.

    Davis Was Arrested in 2023

After years of investigation, Las Vegas police arrested Davis in September 2023.

He was subsequently charged with murder in connection with Tupac’s death and pleaded not guilty.

The case has faced several delays, but jury selection took place in August 2026. A 16-member jury was ultimately selected, with opening arguments expected to begin as the trial moves forward.

What Will Prosecutors Try to Prove?

Prosecutors are expected to argue that Davis helped plan the attack and provided the weapon used in the shooting.

They will also rely on evidence surrounding his previous statements and his alleged connection to the other men who were in the Cadillac.

The prosecution does not necessarily need to prove that Davis pulled the trigger. Instead, it will seek to establish that he knowingly participated in the murder.

    What Does the Defence Say?

Davis has pleaded not guilty and disputes the allegations against him.

His defence is expected to challenge the prosecution’s interpretation of his past statements and question the reliability of evidence connecting him to the killing.

The defence has also argued against treating Davis’ memoir and previous comments as straightforward admissions of guilt.

A Trial Decades in the Making

The trial is expected to revisit the events of one of the most significant moments in hip-hop history.

Tupac’s murder shocked the music world and became surrounded by theories, rumours and speculation. His death, followed months later by the killing of fellow rap superstar The Notorious B.I.G., intensified questions about the violent rivalry surrounding hip-hop during the 1990s.

    Tupac’s Lasting Legacy

Despite dying at just 25, Tupac Shakur became one of the most influential artists in music history.

His songs explored racism, poverty, violence, relationships and life in disadvantaged communities, while his outspoken personality made him a major cultural figure.

Nearly 30 years after his death, the trial of Duane “Keffe D” Davis could provide a long-awaited legal examination of what happened on that September night in Las Vegas.

However, even with the trial underway, questions surrounding the identity of the person who actually fired the fatal shots may continue to generate debate.
