Kercher Family Objects To Knox’s Edinburgh Fringe Performance

Amanda Knox’s upcoming comedy show “Cartwheel” at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe has sparked criticism from Meredith Kercher’s family.

The show explores Knox’s life as a mother and her plans to explain her past in Perugia, Italy, to her daughter.

The title “Cartwheel” refers to a claim that Knox performed cartwheels at a police station after Kercher’s death. The incident became one of the most discussed moments during the murder investigation.

Stephanie Kercher Says The Show Causes More Pain

Meredith Kercher’s sister, Stephanie Kercher, criticised Knox’s decision to use parts of the case in a comedy performance.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast, Stephanie said Knox should think about how the family feels and imagine the situation involving her own sister.

She said Meredith’s family still carries deep pain nearly 20 years after her death.

    Petition Challenges The Comedy Production

A petition started by one of Meredith Kercher’s friends has collected thousands of signatures against the show.

The petition claims the performance damages Meredith’s memory and risks making violence against women appear less serious.

Stephanie said the issue also raises concerns about how artists handle real tragedies and the stories of victims.

Amanda Knox Responds To The Criticism

Amanda Knox defended “Cartwheel” and said the show does not make jokes about Meredith Kercher’s murder.

She explained that the performance focuses on her experience of public judgment and the trauma connected to the case.

Knox said comedy can explore difficult subjects such as grief, identity, and personal struggles.

She also argued that some critics have not watched the performance and that certain descriptions of the show do not reflect its actual content.

Edinburgh Fringe Venue Defends Artistic Freedom

The venue hosting the show, Gilded Balloon Teviot, said the Edinburgh Festival Fringe welcomes different perspectives and forms of creative expression.

The controversy has renewed debate over the relationship between personal storytelling, comedy, and respect for victims.

    The Amanda Knox Case Background

Amanda Knox and Meredith Kercher were exchange students who shared a home in Perugia when Kercher died in 2007.

Italian authorities convicted Knox, and she spent four years in prison before courts later cleared her. Italy’s highest court confirmed her final acquittal in 2015.

The debate around “Cartwheel” continues to raise questions about where entertainment ends and sensitivity toward real-life tragedies begins.
