Actor Lukas Gage has revealed the real-world figures who influenced his preparation for Hulu’s upcoming Prison Break reboot, offering insight into how he built his character in the reimagined crime drama.
Gage, who plays a first-time congressional candidate in the series, said he studied former West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin while developing the role. Speaking at the premiere of Voicemails for Isabelle in Hollywood, he explained that Manchin’s long-standing political presence made him a useful reference point.
He also pointed to former U.S. President Barack Obama as a major inspiration, describing him as a “template” for the kind of leadership presence he aimed to channel on screen. Gage noted that his research focused on figures he personally admires rather than fictional political archetypes.

The upcoming Prison Break reboot will expand the original Fox universe with a new cast and storyline. While it maintains ties to the original series, Gage emphasized that the creative direction is intentionally different.
According to the actor, the new version leans into a darker and more intense tone. He described the show as “gritty, dark, and scary,” highlighting its departure from the earlier format.
Gage also noted that the creative team aims to honor the original series while avoiding a direct replication, allowing the reboot to establish its own identity. The move to Hulu, he added, has also given producers more freedom to explore mature themes and storytelling.
