Actress and filmmaker Olivia Wilde has revisited the intense public scrutiny she experienced during her relationship with singer Harry Styles, describing the global attention as overwhelming and, at times, deeply personal.
Speaking on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Wilde, 42, said the reaction to their romance was often extreme. She noted that much of the criticism appeared to stem from fans’ emotional attachment to Styles, which she described as a parasocial relationship that intensified public judgment.
According to Wilde, the pressure surrounding global celebrities creates an environment where personal relationships become public debates. She praised Styles for handling fame with composure, calling the expectations placed on him “very heavy” and difficult to manage.
The Don’t Worry Darling director also addressed the reaction to their age gap, saying it sparked widespread discussion online. While she acknowledged the controversy, Wilde admitted she still struggles to fully understand why it generated such strong opinions.
Despite the backlash, she said the relationship itself remained largely unaffected by outside noise. Wilde described the period as a “protected bubble,” where she and Styles were able to maintain a sense of privacy away from public criticism.
She also reflected on how her visible happiness at the time appeared to frustrate some observers, including moments when she attended Styles’ concerts and danced in the crowd.
Beyond her relationship with Styles, Wilde briefly touched on her split from actor Jason Sudeikis, noting that the end of their engagement had already occurred before it became public knowledge.
